In 1970, Sister Mary Yukenda from Zambia wrote to Dr. Ernst Stuhlinger, Deputy Director of the Space Flight Center at NASA, asking:
"With so many children on Earth going hungry, how can we spend billions on a project on Mars?"
Dr. Stuhlinger replied:
"Although our space research may seem distant from Earth, extending humanity’s vision to the Moon, the Sun, planets, and faraway stars, astronomers care deeply about our planet. Space projects not only improve life through new technologies, but also deepen our appreciation for Earth, life, and humanity. Space exploration makes Earth better."
